Observed over the last couple days. Thé feb 16th interface is a mix of sun crusts on south aspects and into the alpine in steep solars, west aspects to around 2000m and north and east aspects to around 1700m. wind exposed terrain at alpine and tree line terrain are mostly very hard windslabs. Sheltered and low angle east and and north facing skiing between 2700-1700m had been skiing quite enjoyably with a light boot top fluff atop windslabs and no signs of instability. The new hs is touchy on these surfaces currently. skied yesterday and today(east and south east aspects between 2000-1300m. Where it’s slabbed up by winds is producing very easy to easy RP and SP shears and propagating in extended columns upon isolation or with a light pole tap.. wind affected areas encountered had anywhere from 20 to 40cm of soft fist density snow. today riding sections of wind packed snow these surfaces were cracking and self arresting on lower angle terrain at tree line. Ski cutting micro terrain and convex rolls around 35 degree, steeper and unsupported terrain features was producing slabs from 0.5 to 1 at tree line and not running far into lower angle terrain below. On average 15cm deep. Where the snow was mainly still a light fluff. We found good sluffing and ski cut small Loose dry avalanches up to size 1 running on crusts in steeper tree features or small gully’s in steep below tree line terrain. In the morning at the car it was -3 there were moderate winds and about 10cm of new snow with about 15 higher up. at the ridge top at 2200m the winds were re distributing snow with winds in the moderate to strong range. snowing less then 1cm per hour. After discussing our findings we now casted the following for today. Con Con Mod P1: windslab/storm slab All asp /alp and tL Possible to likely/ size 1-2 P2: dry loose All asp/ tl and btl Possible /size 1-1.5
