Quick Observation

Today we spent the day north of Sparwood where we found 15cm of new snow over previous surfaces of hard wind-pressed snow and crusts. As the day progressed the storm snow was settling and we observed short shooting cracks as we toured along a wind-affected ridge. There were a few natural storm slab avalanches observed in steep north aspects in the alpine. Cornices were large in this area and new growth was reactive. Winds were moving some snow around in open terrain features and the freezing level hovered around 1800m for most of the day.
