Detoured from a Wapta trip today, did two laps on Helen Shoulder. The predicted storm was rolling in full force, mostly high winds but cloudy conditions and some snow falling already. Wind was having a rapid affect on the snow, creating a hard slabby surface layer. There was also intense wind transport happening on the ridge. We experienced some cracks and whumpfs on the second lap, mostly in open areas and on rolls, to be expected. Play safe out there the next couple of days!
Dug a pit on a 38 degree slope in open trees. Air temp was -3C. CTM15 result on the deep layer down roughly 50cms. We rode mellower slopes and stayed out of open slopes and did not see any signs of instability. On the second lap, on the up-track we experienced smallish cracks and whumpfs.
