Went to Balu pass today and found fairly nice ski quality. Surface snow was warming quickly by early afternoon and pinwheels were coming out of south and north aspects on the ski back down Connaught Creek. Of note, we experienced extensive whumphing when travelling up the sheltered S. facing ridge directly north of Balu Pass. Probing with ski poles, we could feel two buried sun crusts approx. 50cm down (in line with the bulletin) that were likely the source of the problem. As such, we stayed out of steeper south facing treeline terrain. Treeline and above, fresh windslabs were obvious and we stayed away.
