Quick report
Went for a walk out of Glen Alps to take a look at how our delayed spring has been affecting stability. Still able to start on skis, with the occasional scrappy section. Off the bootpack snow in the valley was isothermal, with ski pen to the ground. Once gaining the ridge to false peak, dug a solar and polar pit at mid elevations. Found a tale of two snowpacks. in wind loaded SW facing terrain @ 3300ft, an extended column test did not propagate. the top meter of the snowpack was generally well bonded. Free water had percolated around 60cm down, and the snowpack below that was relatively moist. Recent precip was in the realm of 6cm of high SWE snow. Steeper solar aspects had debris from numerous small wet loose avalanches. On the ridge itself, wind had formed drifts in the new snow. despite a superficial refreeze, the crust below the new snow was ski supportable in mid elevations on both solar and polar aspects. On North facing terrain @ 3800ft, the snowpack was still showing signs of midwinter instability. An ECT produced stubborn propagation on depth hoar near the base of the snowpack. Additionally, the snowpack was noticeably drier. Overall structure on polar aspects remains poor.
