Very poor snowpack structure in areas where the overall snow cover is shallow. I poked around in shallow areas on the west side Franklin Basin side of the ridge.

Very weak sugary or faceted snow grains have grown and crystal chains are forming... I walked above my test pit and the snow collapsed, the slab braking into chunks as it failed on the predominate weak layer.

I found feathery surface hoar or frost crystals glittering on the snow surface as I walked on the ridge top. The surface hoar formed on top of hard drifts, sastrugi, and wind board.
