Snowbird Glacier
Quick report
Went up to manually measure a snow survey where the late Snowbird Glacier Snolite weather station used to be: average depth = 78”, SWE = 26.4” There’s 4-6” of fresh powder from a couple days ago that’s starting to facet out, which is sitting on top of a decomposing/very faceted 4-finger hard wind slab. Fresh sugar on old crusty sugar. Didn’t dig a formal pit, but a couple quick hand pits on the glacier showed that old crumbly wind slab being at least 8-12” thick, possibly more.
Avalanche
Observed a couple recent natural D1 slab avalanches. One was east aspect ~5500’ near Yisbo that looked like it started as a point release and stepped down onto a shallow pocket slab. Other was north aspect ~5400’ in the bowl just to the west of Glacier Pass. Also plenty of wet point releases on south aspects in the predictable spots below rock bands.
