With such a shallow snowpack, and significant radiational heat loss at night, the loose faceted snow on the ground just gets more faceted.

1.5 to 2.5 feet (40 to 80 cms) of total snow height in upper-elevation terrain. Could easily stick ski pole to the ground everywhere.
