Upper Burnt

Trapper Gilowski, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Today in the Upper Burnt we had many signs instability between shooting cracks and wind slab avalanches. The day started of cold and as we made our way higher up the mountain the temps warmed up to -2.2. We dug our pit at 1400m on a North East facing slope on a 24 degree incline we had light winds from the sw but later into the day the winds became exteame gusts transporting lots of snow. In our pit we had several layers of concern but the most reactive one was down 35cm on a rain crust layer with facets reacting in the moderate range (CTM15). Above tree line the wind slabs were a great concern. Multiple size 1-2 sled triggered avalanches and natural slides let go today. Be safe and careful with this new storm coming in as it’s bringing lots of wind. It would be advised to avoid alpine slopes until the storm layers have time to bond.
