Cloudy Cokley

Cold, cloudy and windy up on Mt Cokley/Arrowsmith today. The convective clouds yesterday left behind some cool graupel balls (like hail) but for the main part, surfaces conditions were very wind affected in the higher open terrain. Down low in the trees a thin breakable crust made skiing uninviting. Just below the surface there is approximately 10-25 cm of snow, from the April 18 storm, sitting on a multi layered crust sandwich. The crust gave some interesting snow pit test results, but we could not trigger any avalanches on small test slopes while skiing or riding skidoos (even on steep unsupported convex rolls). Things seem to be locked into place for now, except maybe in the alpine where there was some snow being transported by the strong winds.
