Krunchy Kitchener

AvCan Vancouver Island, Wednesday 21st December, 2022 7:00AM

We wandered up to the Prince of Wales range today for a look at how the season is shaping up in this zone. We found 10-15 cm of incredibly low density, blower powder on the surface in the morning, without any signs of new slab formation. North winds picked up in the afternoon, filled our skin tracks and just beginning to form thin, very soft slabs in leeward areas. Anything with even slight shelter was unaffected. The new snow did a fine job of improving the ski quality here, but we still spent much of the day battling the hard crust just beneath it. Luckily the crust was supportive to our skis. This meant that the best turns of the day were in flatter spots where we wouldn't need to sink an edge in very far. We got another look at the late-November layer in our profile as well and had it produce a hard, resistant result in a compression test. An extended column test had our column shear on the 29th tap (hard) and propagate this shear across most of the column.
