Fly Pilot

South Coast

AvCan Vancouver Island , Thursday 2nd January, 2025 5:15PM

Fast and easy travel up Sky Pilot way apart from the scrappy forest scramble. In our pit on a west aspect at 1600 m we found a friendly, progressively dense (fist to pencil hardness) 100 cm of aging storm snow above the Christmas crust that yielded no results in snowpack tests. This is a lot more on the crust than on the North Shore or in Whistler. We skied one of the more well-traveled couloirs between Sky Pilot and Habrich, not sure of the name, with our movement producing a few thin storm/wind slab releases from the steep entrance slopes. Despite being fairly tracked up, the couloir skied quite well. It snowed about 1 cm per hour all day but we observed minimal wind and negligible wind transport. Pretty fly day in Squamonix!
