Nicci's Notch

Tylah, Saturday 25th February, 2023 2:50PM

Solid crust under today's light snowfall. No whumphing or cracking heard on our way up cheops towards the notch. Very wine affected crust. Skinning up was challenging. Our splitboarder just boot packed a chunk of it about 3/4 the way up. Dug a pit just in the entrance of the notch off to the side (below the tree on the right in the photo) . Snow depth tested across the opening. Anywhere from 190cm to 80cm due to snow drifts. Column results felt good. E3 break about 3cm from new snow. M6 shear at 15cm. No other reaction even with very heavy hits. It took a shovel behind the column to get the rest of it down and it pulled off at the ground. Was solid enough to hold at either end after coming off. No response with a skier jumping 3ft back from the edge of the pit. Took a shovel to fill it in. About 60cm from the ground and below felt quite crystallized, didn't measure but would assume 1mm. No reaction other than surface sluff on the ride down. Fairly light snow on hard crust beneath. Even some of the drifts on the sides didn't slide when tested. Decent day, first time on the run, missed a nice exit, found cliffs. Good times. Found my way down Mondays Cheops North bowl debris. Sharky as expected.
