We took a walk to Cairn Hill today. The sky was mostly cloudy with occasional breaks of sun - we were warm most of the day. Winds were calm. S aspects had notably low snow with dirt and grass showing in many places. Flat ground and polars held between 1.5’-2.5’ of snow. Around 4600 ft on a North aspect I dug around with my hand and found about 4 “ of wet snow over a barely noticeable decomposing crust with about a foot and a half of facets to the ground beneath it. At lower elevations and on solars the crust beneath the 4 ish inches of wet snow was more pronounced. We got occasional cracking off our skis while skinning- the cracks were no more than 2 ft long. We jumped on North facing test slopes and could not get anything to move. I think had we done the same on S, the top four inches would have slid more easily on the crust. Snow was glopping on our skins on the way out around 12:30.
