Quick report
Happy start to meteorological spring. TLDR: many different snow surfaces out there. Mostly sun affected, but plenty of wind affect present too. North facing slopes still harbored cold, wind affected snow, albeit not widespread Mount Rainier Nordic Patrol headed out around 9 with summer like temperatures of 45°. Even with the warm temps, the clear skies allowed most surfaces to refreeze overnight away from the trees. Southeast facing slopes quickly softened by 10am while other aspects lingered until later Panorama face was quite manageable with ski crampons, but would not go without them. We descended from McClure Rock towards Mazama ridge as snow softened up nicely by midday, allowing for some softer corn-ish turns. Mazama back bowls harbored a great summary of the variety of surfaces you can encounter depending on your aspect: cold, wind affected snow -> grabby, thick sun affected snow. Plenty of people out and about and plenty of avalanche activity to look at from the past week. All in all a lovely start the meteorological spring!
