Quick report
Today we measured 9.5 inches of new low density snow. Moderate winds overnight transported the loose dry snow to leeward aspects creating 4F soft slabs. Temperatures remained cold all day with light winds in our location and a few moderate gusts above treeline with small amounts of blowing snow. The incremental ~40 inches of new snow during the 4 day storm has settled well in wind protected locations and has been loaded 1-2 feet thick on lee aspects by winds. It continued to lightly snow for most of the day with diminishing winds. We dug a pit on a south/southwest aspect around 5500 feet that did not reveal alarming stability results in this location. We targeted a weak facet layer 75cm deep with a PST 70/100@225End. The other snowpack info can be found in the Snowpilot. Our seasonal snowstake measures 148 inches near Paradise.
Avalanche
Saw evidence of numerous small loose dry avalanches on terrain 40 degrees and steeper on all aspects and elevations. In several isolated steep locations we saw remnants of slab avalanches on east facing leeward slopes. The slabs appeared to be within the recent snow with crowns 1-2 feet thick located near ridges and abrupt changes in terrain. The slabs we found were of 4Finger hardness and stubborn to react, but our location was wind sheltered. In some places small cornices and wind drifts were found which would fail under the weight of a human.
