Quick report
Traveled conservative line to Artist point, did not notice skin track collapses or obvious weakness underfoot. Snow balls knocked loose by uphill skiers did not enlarge with travel before noon. Skis sank to supportive layer under new snow, multiple layers obvious with pole testing. Dug a pit NE aspect low angle rollover near Artist Point. Layers at ~5 cm (F), 20 cm, (4F) consisted of new snow, with an older layer at 45 cm (1F), and 60 cm (K rain crust 2 cm thick). Below rain crust was 20 cm of 1F/pencil consolidated snow, at 80 cm down there was a boot supportive extremely consolidated floor. Was able to push a probe to the hilt with great effort. ETC negative until fracture occurred at 35 cm down with 2 hits from shoulder no propagation. This was replicated at another section which fractured at the same impact and depth, no easily recognized layer was present besides a few scant needle-like crystals. No propagation and low energy fracture here. Unlikely that a skier could trigger a slide on the deeper rain crust layer but it would be catastrophic if a cornice fall/wet loose stepped down (60 cm deep) Weather was clear and sunny with snow becoming stickier with exposure. Low (<2mph SE) ridge line wind measured at highest point. Air temp ~0 degrees C, Snow surface -15, under 60 cm rain crust 0 degrees C. Snow pack appears right side up and we did not notice any instability on our lower angle lines.
Avalanche
Witnessed a small (~d1) dry loose triggered by a ski cut on NE aspect of Huntoon point. Evidence of multiple D2 slides, one obviously skier triggered yesterday (Dog leg?)
