Mostly sunny skies with increasing cloud cover developing to the west over the Sierra Crest. Warm temperatures with moderate to strong SW winds along upper ridges.
Snowpack
We went to Rose Knob today to look for some spring snow conditions. There is currently usable snow at the trailhead for travel, but this snow is melting quickly with many obstacles and a shallow snowpack below 8000'. Some walking will be required shortly if using this area. A poor refreeze occurred at the trailhead, but this improved with elevation with more supportable snow conditions above 8400'. Very light rain fell here yesterday with a thin, but firm, rain crust on the surface near the summit on shaded aspects. Travel conditions were good on the upper sun exposed slopes with supportable corn snow. Moderate to strong southwest winds helped with the overnight refreeze and to limit some warming of the snow surface through the morning. Northerly aspects in this area are transitional with wet and deep snow near and below 8500'. Returning back to the parking area in the late morning, lower elevation southerly slopes were barely ski supportive with sticky and shallow snow conditions.
