Quick report

Chilly day in the Red Mountain area. We saw surface hoar in open areas down to Carpenter Valley (pictured). Calm winds. Cold N/NE slopes had 3-8”of near surface facets above an edgeable crust that made for surprisingly enjoyable skiing.

Avalanche

On some steeper pitches the NSFs released as D.5 dry loose avalanches, although the slow speed and high density made them behave more like loose wet slides. One ran ~50 feet downslope and briefly knocked me off my feet when I tried to ski across it.
