Quick report
On our ride from LTS we experienced a variety of surface conditions, from firm trail and old tracks, surface facets, surface hoar, wind packed , melt freeze crust and some slightly wet surface snow. We dug in two different locations. One on a NE aspect and one on due E aspect. Both around 7,500’. No layers of concern were identified. However we did see some sudden results and irregular breaks on small column tests, but no propagation on extended column tests. These failures were within the upper snowpack between 15cm and 20cm down. Total snowpack observed was around 140cm Sheltered areas that stay in the shade had the best snow for riding but anywhere with no tracks had soft snow for riding on edge and carving turns, the melt freeze crust on the surface was breakable and weak where we encountered it. Surface hoar was observed at lower elevations near open creeks and other exposed ground with water, in places that might hold more moisture in the air. Even in the afternoon around 3pm the surface hoar seemed to be intact.
