This observation was conducted on the SW facing glade which one passes while en route to Van Patten Lake. Light snow begins at 1000h, 29 degrees F, overcast sky. 1030h clouds begin to obscure the sky, light snow continues, calm wind. No blowing snow. Boot penetration is about 10 cm. 55 cm total snow at this location. 0-45 cm large rounded grains and melt-forms consolidating into ice, knife hard. 45-53 cm small rounded grains, fist hard. 53-55 cm is a pencil hard melt-freeze crust. light wind at about 1200h, light snow continues The snow pack on north aspects and throughout sheltered locations consisted of approximately 40cm of sugary facets all the way to ground, interspersed with several thin ice layers.
