Bad skiing, beautiful day
Cathedral Peak and North Couloir Banff Yoho & Kootenay National Park

We wanted a summit day in the sun and without wind, and that is what we had today on Mt Cathedral. Temperature was -23 at the car this morning but warmed signifiantly by the time we were bootpacking the south facing slope, only a very light SW wind near the summit. We anticipated that the skiing would be bad, which it was! Spotty thin hard slab on all elevations and aspects and the upper glacier is scoured to the ice in spots with great waves of sastrugi where ice is covered. The N couloir is bony but with careful skiing rocks were avoidable. We were happy to have two 30m ropes of which we used every meter for the rappel over the blue grade 2 ice climb. We didn't observe any avalanches today.
