Quick report
Left the Meiss Sno-Park around 10:30am to head up the west side of Red Lake Peak. Coverage at the trailhead was inconsistent. There was enough coverage in the trees below 9000' that skiing was possible, though I had to boot through a few dirt patches. Above 9000' the coverage depended mostly on the aspect: exposed ridgelines and southern exposures were mostly bare, with most of the more sheltered gullies still holding snow. The best snow I found was a 500' vertical section off the west side of Red Lake Peak. There are places where the latest round of new snow has not yet totally consolidated with the existing snowpack, and these spots became quite sticky after about noon. The northern aspects of the southern end of the Meiss basin still have good coverage, and the snow on these northern aspects was still pretty nice corn at 2pm. Saw some relatively recent cornice fall from some of the steeper sections on those bowls. Air temperature was probably in the 60s, and my thermometer in the sun was reading 70s for most of the day. Overall, better skiing than I thought given the trailhead conditions, but my impression is that southern aspect skiing in this area at these elevations only has a few more days to go given the current weather. Coverage on northern aspects below Round Top and around Winnemucca Lake looked to be much more consistent.
