New snow from the past week increased in depth from about 15 cm at 5,500 feet to about 40 cm at the upper elevations. Winds had been present, with moderate wind transport at upper elevations. We spent most of the day on solar aspects, and we experienced a lot of isolated cracking in the new snow around our skis, especially where it was sitting on a pronounced crust below 6,500 feet. We dug a pit at 7,800 feet to about 100 cm on a South aspect. We had non-propogating failures at 40 cm at the interface with last week's snow (approximately ECTN18). We located an ice crust approximately 90 cm - ECTX. We nibbled around the edges of avalanche terrain, but did not feel comfortable committing to all avalanche terrain simply because there was so much new snow.
