- <p>Winds were obviously a factor this morning. We found touchy snow through much of our skin (NW-N-NE aspects) due to wind affected surface snow and firm/icy old snow beneath. One of the largest cracks from our tour and some cornicing ca. 6600ft are both pictured below.</p>
Snowpack
Picked up about 15cm of snow overnight, with another 3 or 4cm falling in our 2 hour tour. Surface snow was dense powder, but anything remotely exposed had wind effect on top. This included wind whales, small cornices, soft slabs, etc. Beneath the new snow is the old surface, which was wet and allowed several cm of ski pen in places, but was conversely quite icy and firm in others. The firm subsurface seemed to be largely in wind exposed locations that had otherwise already been stripped or at least cooled off by convection.
