Roughly 13” of new snow on the now buried surface hoar that has been plaguing us for the last 3 weeks or so. We dug 3 pits WNW facing at roughly 6250’. Snow depth @240cm. Protected area from the aggressive winds from the last day/night. CT7 on all 3 pits. One pit had propagation with a splitting crack on the other side of the column opposite the shovel at ECT16, everything on that buried surface hoar. This was an IPAC class. We planned our routes to stay away from any terrain over 30 degrees (or attached terrain). Red flags for sure. 30 degrees and less is the game. We noted wind slabs near tree line on SW aspects on the decent into our pit zones. I can only imagine leeward zones are extremely touchy. To note, the area of the now buried surface hoar was roughly 2.5cm thick, with a lot of the surface hoar still supporting the weight of the new snow and has yet to collapse (in our wind protected pit area).
