A difficult outing trying to get up to Dirtyface Peak via the Silverly Creek drainage route. The top 1'~3' of snowpack around 4k' was extremely unsupportive when I wasn't under pine/Doug fir tree rain shadows. Lots of bare cliff faces on south/west aspects. Also stumbled across a semi-recent ~D2.5 avalanche that ran down a few of the gullies around the drainage for several hundred feet (I couldn't determine the start/end zone 100%). Some of the debris was quite large (size of a mini fridge), but the bulk majority of the debris was smaller (watermelon size). Snowpack around the old slide here was not right-side up everywhere: there was a soft crust that had formed on top of the large near surface facets in spots and voids were forming near the ground in sun-exposed areas. I was concerned about larger wet loose avalanches or glide avalanches running to ground. That said, the base snowpack in areas in the chute where the avalanche had slid seemed stout. There weren't any obvious overhead hazards (no snow on trees; cliff faces were bare), but my view of the terrain above me was limited.
