Devils Thumb

With below treeline being protected from the wind, there is still soft snow for the last storm.

Above treeline is wind-swept and hard pack. These slides in the gulleys are good reminders that even on ~25 degree terrain like Devil's Thumb micro terrain, rollovers, gulleys, etc can accumulate more snow and be steep enough to avalanche.

No instability was observed in the trees. Above the tree line, and as we approached the gulley there were several slides and old cracks along the South side of the gulley

Above Treeline the snow was windswept, hard pack, or scoured. In the gulley, all of the previous new snow had been loaded into one very large wind slab.  Where we measured it was over 400cm to the ground where at the same spot on the face was less than 30cm.

In the glades, the snow was still relatively soft and had been protected from the wind. Some spots had thin hard slab underneath soft snow but only in less forested areas.
