Quick report

Winter 24/25 continues today with another quick and hard hitting storm this evening.  Leading up to todays inbound storm temperatures rose well above freezing the past week. This temperature increase leading into storm has been the modus operandi for this winter, which puts us with an overall mostly stable snowpack.  Snow layers and interfaces are bonded fairly well in most locations, especially on southern/solar exposures.  This past week, I've seen signs of small wet loose and wind slab instabilities on different slopes.  I did multiple Extended Column Tests on north/north-east slopes at Near Tree Line elevation.  Some were positive for propagation in the 20+ (hard) category with Q3 shear quality, meaning rough and non planar. Most were negative in propagation.  With that being said, zero surface sign of deep instability, meaning no large avalanches or signs of such were found.

New snow weather forecasts predict any where from 9-30" tonight above 8000 foot elevation.  Which will raise the avalanche danger to Considerable or even High, actual snow amounts dependent.  Tomorrow is not a day we normally post an avalanche forecast, but want to inform folks if going out that the avalanche danger will be elevated.  Please take caution, make a plan and avoid travel in steep consequential avalanche terrain.

Weather

Cloud Cover
overcast

Pre storm conditions. Windy and sunny in the lower elevations and increasing cloud cover and snow along the Sierra front.

Snowpack

Variable surface condtions and depths based on aspect and elevation. Wind board, sun crust,  and manky wet snow that hasn't transitioned to melt/freeze corn snow is the big surface condition contenders currently. With another storm actively inbound with snow fall starting less than an hour ago, these surface condtions will change yet again.
