Quick report
Skied the main chute of Mount Angeles this morning and found good turns in spring-like conditions with signs of recent (past day or two) wet avalanche problems, with few new issues cropping up as we traveled today. Skies were cloudy, with the sun weakly breaking through around 12:30. We observed runnels and large pinwheels which gouged deep into the snow surface on E-S-W aspects, alongside other more run-of-the-mill rollerballs, etc. in similar terrain. While skinning up, we noted a soft crust a few inches below the surface of the snow around 4500 feet. A quick hand pit at this elevation also revealed a cohesive ~8 inch upper layer of snow overlaying much more rounded snow grains. The upper crust was noticeably firmer (couldn’t punch thru with pole handle) above 5000 feet or so. Once the sun (timidly) broke out as we were halfway through our descent, things started warming up quite rapidly. We soon began sinking up to the bottom of our ankles in places, speaking to our very wet and isothermal snowpack right now. Travel was pleasantly simple, and we were able to skin/ski just about from/to the road. Snow conditions were fun and springy until the warm-up, after which things got grabbier and harder to ski as we sank deeper. No precip while we were out from 10-1:30.
