Eddies South Face

Quick report

Inversion - freezing at the car, and a few degrees above freezing on ridgetop. We toured in and out the common Eddies ski track, toured/walked along the ridge about 33% of its length, and skied a steep southwest facing line. The skin track going up was not too bad with rocks and gravel sticking out, you can skin/step without sliding on the rocks. But going downhill was horrible, as you had to slow down between each of the 100 rock patches to avoid scratching skis. I don't recommend it to anyone until there's another 12" of snow in the lower Eddies trees. No formal snow tests completed. At points, we had to wallow through belly deep facets on the ridgeline between a couple brief scrambles. No instabilities noticed. The snow was OK - soft enough on more west facing ridges of the Eddies south wall. It's difficult to estimate the number of glide cracks, but I would guess that about 50-75% of the width of the entire Eddies south face has a glide crack at some elevation. Having dropped first, I didn't know there were several on the line, and had to jump over a few. Then with eyes on the face from the bottom, we were able to communicate clean lines to our comrades. There seemed to be more clean crack-free lines in the center of the Eddies south face, near the more gentle faces where ridges and spines are less pronounced. For anyone trying to get at the Eddies southface, I'd recommend approaching from the Iditarod trail, and into the valley to get eyes on the glides, before choosing ascent route.
