Quick report
We set out from the Snug Harbor trailhead under clear skies and single digit temps. Trail conditions were overall better than expected with about 4-6 inches of old unconsolidated storm snow sitting on a stout crust. As we progressed up past Rainbow lake and Vmax, there was evidence of strong winds on both ridge lines and valley bottom. We noted a few older avalanches as we rode. One deeper wind slab that had possibly stepped down lower, 60.34951, -149.66312, on a steep North aspect. We also observed a number of small wet loose avalanche on a south facing aspect of an unnamed peak, 60.3377, -149.55613. Conditions in the valley were highly variable with only isolated areas having been spared by the winds. Today the winds were gusting moderate in both the ridge tops and valley bottoms. On our way back to the trailhead we noted a south facing aspect showing evidence of radiation recrystallization and near-surface faceting.
