Collapsing
Observed

It felt more like the Cascades than Idaho today. The new snow, which measured 8 inches (20 cm), initially came in cold but quickly transitioned to wet and heavy at the surface. On the ski out, I noticed a thin crust had developed below approximately 7,900 feet. I continued to observe propagating results in the 12/13 layer, along with collapses in areas that had not been previously traveled.

Snowpack

I conducted snowpack observations on two slopes to assess stability. On a north-facing slope at 8,400 feet, I identified the 12/13 layer as a mix of surface hoar and facets. Extended Column Tests (ECT) yielded propagating results at 22 and 23 taps (ECTP22, ECTP23), while a Propagation Saw Test (PST) produced a failure at 28/100 with END at 63 cm depth. The new snow from the previous night formed an upside-down layer in the upper 20 cm of the snowpack, indicating potential instability. On a southeast-facing slope at 8,200 feet with a 28° incline and a snow depth of 95 cm, no propagating results were observed in ECTs, but a PST indicated a failure at 24/100 with END at 65 cm depth.
