Quick report
Our group traveled and skied in Huntington Ravine between 1000 & 1500. We had not skied the day prior and approached the day with an open mind and no preconceived notions. Our first run, we ascended South Gully. After a few clean hand sheers on the way up, we dug a pit and performed an ETC at around 4650'. Cracks initiated under the shovel after 21 taps, and propagated a bit further each of the next 3. By 24 taps, the crack had fully propagated across the column. Seeing this, we decided to test the lower half of the slope before committing to skiing from higher. Turns were smooth and supportable. Next we ascended escape hatch. Here, boot penetration was a bit deeper than in South, and there were noticeable pools of graupel about 1' down. We decided to test the slab's reactivity above this layer of graupel by performing another ETC. After 30 taps, we did not observe propagation. However, in defiance of the notorious SWAG guidelines, we gave a few bonus taps. We observed full propagation on the 32nd tap and decided to ski from a similar elevation to our last run. Again, turns were smooth and supportable. With slabs supportable to skis, no cracking or collapsing observed in our travels, and stubborn test results, we felt comfortable pushing higher into South Gully. Aside from a pocket of softer snow skiers left side of the upper start zone, snow surface was pencil hard and consistent. Turns were good. We wrapped up the day by skiing Odell's from below the ice bulge. There were isolated pools of graupel underneath the snow surface, but no signs of instability were observed. Turns were firmer than in South or Escape Hatch but still decent.
