IT SNOWED! Good day in Jewel Basin with some fun early season obs. We noticed that the wind had been strong out of the west all Friday and last night, and we were expecting to see a few inches of new snow. We had active precipitation all day and observed wind drifting snow with strong winds 30mph out of the west. We experienced many skier triggered cracks on east facing aspects in Jewel Basin. Cracks propagated up to 40 feet and were about 4-6 inches thick. On a more northerly aspect we came across a natural crack which had propagated around 40 feet and was 9 inches thick. This cracking appeared to be happening between a wind slab formed overnight and a less dense layer of fresh snow below from yesterday. From our observations we did not see any avalanches but we did experience poor visibility throughout the day with a low cloud ceiling.
