Quick report

Cracking
widespread

Went out for a tincan trees day on the tail end of the 1/18 storm. We triggered a storm slab avalanche on a W aspect at around 2000 feet. See description. We saw widespread activity on this layer on steeper rollovers in tincan trees. Estimated 1.5-2 feet of of new snow atop tincan trees. Snowfall continuing throughout the day.

Skier triggered storm slab on a W aspect on the upper section of tincan trees. 8-10” storm slab estimated 60 foot length of crown. Skier was not caught. We saw widespread storm slab activity at around this same depth in the snowpack. Upper 8-10 inches of snowpack at this elevation is slightly heavier than the rest of the storm and that weak interface is what this avalanche slid on. With a terrain trap this avalanche could have had enough energy to bury a skier.
