Quick report

Targhee's patrol responded to a reported avalanche off the backside of Mary's, a visitor had triggered a cornice failure and took quite the ride, more details are in the avalanche summary. The public responded first, called us, we arrived on the scene, stabilized the patient and then we requested Wyoming SAR, who came and short-hauled the individual before weather moved in.

A visiting skier was just checking out the world on the backside of Mary's, booted to the summit, and did not know how consequential the backside of Mary's and Targhee in general is. The visitor was just trying to get a view over the backside, triggered a cornice failure, took a 100' ride over a cliff to a hanging snowfield, triggered a 40'+ wide slab, 2-3'+ deep, and went another 200' over another 30-60' cliff band where they thankfully arrested on top of the debris, as they did not have a beacon or helmet on. Folks skinning in the area witnessed the event and were first on the scene, they alerted Targhee's patrol, who responded and coordinated with Wyoming SAR to short-haul the patient to EMS.
