Quick report
Yesterday we hiked up Summer Lion's Head to assess the windslab size and sensitivity near the avalanche paths. We broke trail through 1-2 feet of untouched snow the entire way. At 4200 feet on the flank of the first avalanche path a large cornice was seen at the top of the path (SE aspect). There was also old debris on the flank and at the bottom of the path. A slight crown line was visible under the area of the cornice and to the north side of the path.
We did column tests and found a stubborn to react windslab approximately 20 cm thick and 1 finger hard with a slightly more reactive 4 cm thick, fist hard slab on top. The bed surface in this location was crusty ice, but not a smooth surface. All column tests failed at the interface between the 1 finger hard slab and a 6-10 cm layer of 4 finger hard snow beneath it and lacked propagation propensity (STM, ECTN12).
