Lots of new snow today, and honestly my first pow day of the year. In areas that did not have a solid crust on the old snow, I experienced what felt like near-constant collapsing and cracking on my skin up. It subsided some as I got to higher elevation, but I suspect that was due to more exposure to sun and wind, and did not equate to better stability. Some collapses ran up to 75’ from me, and were fairly easy to notice with all the light new snow falling off of bushes and trees. One slope I skied had a very brief portion right at 30 degrees, and the slope shattered as I approached it, without sliding. I did not dig a pit today because nothing that I would glean from it would have changed my terrain selection—I would be quite surprised if there wasn’t propagation in the first 5 taps right now. Subjectively, the new snow felt upside down when it was on top of the now ancient facet base, and could be kind of difficult to ski in at times. Most of it made for amazing skiing.
