Quick report

Monthly transceiver practice at the WMR beacon park, then a quick walk to Hellroaring Peak.

  • Found a couple layers of buried (decomposing) surface hoar roughly one foot deep at 6700', North aspect
  • This layer propagated in an Extended Column Test
  • No other obvious signs of instability
  • No sign of recent wind transport
  • Solar aspects had two thin melt-freeze crusts in the top foot of snow
  • The top crust was supportable on open slopes and punchy in the trees
