Alaska Avalanche School Rec Level 1 course went to the Independence Mine area to dig pits at ~3500’ on east aspects. It was overcast with clouds moving in and out and flat light, with very light snow falling on and off during the day. Our snow pits varied in depth from 65-80cm, and test results all occurred on the facets at the bottom of the snowpack. We found the snowpack had poor structure, good strength, and moderate energy.
