Quick report
Our group traveled up the West slopes of Kendall today to enjoy the beautiful weather and new snow. We dug a pit on a ~38 degree test slope at 5000’ on a West aspect and observed a total snow depth of 215cm with 55cm of fist hard storm snow over the 12/30 crust, and a further 20cm of fist hard between that and the upper portion of the solstice crust complex. We performed a compression test and had an initial result of CTM19 RP Q2 down 32cm in the new snow (perhaps the interface between the two storms?), though the snow above was not very cohesive. We continued and had a second failure of CTH 24 SP Q1 down 57cm, just under the 12/30 crust (see photo). An extended column test had results of ECTN 12 and 28 on the same layers, respectively. These results did not translate to any signs of instability or activity during our trip, and the high clouds kept the new snow and trees from shedding, though exposed creeks and thinly covered logs did pose hazards as we dropped elevation.
