A dusting of snow greeted us at the Sperry Trailhead and we walked with skis on our backs until the Snyder Junction. Above 5500' until our high point of 6500' there was 5-8" of dense recent storm snow sitting atop a less dense layer of snow in the MF crust. This upsidedown snow was largely unreactive(except for some cracking on switchbacks along the skintrack) until we got above 6300' where we heard booming collapses of the snowpack every five steps. These collapses could be heard spreading above and below our skintrack, we lost count after about 10 of them. We decided to turn around and enjoy the less reactive snow on slopes below 35 degrees beneath us. Weather throughout the day was intermittent snow alternating with sunshine that consolidated the upper slab of snow throughout the day. Winds were light out of the northeast with moderate gusts.
Avalanche
We observed one recent natural off a West aspect of Mount Edwards estimated around 7000'. Our guess was a D2 natural storm slab but we were unable to investigate or see the debris.
