Several muffled whumpfs heard while climbing the skin track at the indicated location (~8800' N, 30degrees). No shooting cracks or settling of the snowpack otherwise observed. This area did not whumpf while breaking trail 45 minutes earlier. Some cracking observed underfoot while breaking trail across the steep upper side of some tree wells. About a foot of snow at the trailhead but not much old snow beneath making for difficult trail breaking and dangerous skiing below 8k'. 2+ feet of snow above 8k'. Snow above 8k was wind effected and fairly dense while snow below was exceptionally low density and easily sluffed on steep features, making obstacles even more easy to access.
