Snowpack

We made observations on Carson Pass today.  A light dusting of snow existed at pass level with increasing snow as we gained elevation.  We dug a snowpit near 8700' on the Frog Lake Saddle where a shallow and wet snowpack was observed.  A few inches of recent rain soaked snow was found over a few inches of older snow from October storms.  This older snow from October was made up of faceted snow, but is now wet and warm throughout and gaining strength.  We continued up to the shoulder of Elephants Back at 9200'.  A similar snowpack structure existed here, but with more older snow and recent snow present with around 1' total snow depth.  Temperatures remained warm with light rain at this elevation today and limited snow.
