Zone: Rattlesnake (behind Snowbowl)
Weather: The day was characterized by overcast skies with flat light, resulting in poor visibility. Light snowfall was consistent throughout the day. Winds were light from the west while ascending the exposed ridgeline near Point 6 around 11:30 AM. Winds remained minimal for the rest of the day, with snowfall intensifying to moderate levels as we exited the Jenny Lake area at 4:00 PM.
Snowpack: We conducted snowpit tests at similar elevations (~7,880 ft) on two different aspects, observing notable variations in snowpack structure.
Pit #1
Elevation: 7,884 ft
Aspect: South
Snow Depth: 200 cm
Results: No propagation observed. ECTN15 on recent snowfall at 25 cm down; ECTN17 on a melt-freeze layer at 55 cm down.
Pit #2
Elevation: 7,887 ft
Aspect: North
Snow Depth: 215 cm
Results: No propagation observed; ECTX.
Notes: The snowpack appeared well-consolidated in this area. While no results were observed from the ECT, the block fractured at 55 cm and 75 cm down upon shovel shearing.
Conclusion: We enjoyed excellent low-density snow conditions and exercised conservative decision-making throughout the day. With a significant winter storm currently impacting the region, we are allowing the snowpack ample time to settle and stabilize before returning to recreate in this zone.
