Quick report
Small recent avalanches off of Stevens Peak is extremely steep terrain were observed. The pit analysis showed instability on the buried surface hoar layer 40cm down. The cornice off the peak is still huge. In terms of travel, we moved pretty aggressively, knocking out two sweet runs in some steep terrain off the peak. It was partly sunny all day, with minimal winds and temps in the mid to upper 20s. Stability was good, with some minor sloughing in steep terrain.
Avalanche
We observed a old skier triggered avalanche around West Willow on a NE aspect at 6300'. The avalanche was triggered Friday, March 3. It was a splitboarder triggered avalanche, with the person who triggered it being caught but self arrested and rode away just fine. The avalanche ran about 300 feet and failed on a layer of buried surface hoar. Surface hoar is surface hoar. A quick crown profile showed CT16Q1 down 40cm on the buried surface hoar.
