In addition to the avalanche I triggered, I also saw a similar new natural soft slab avalanche on a west aspect on the southern shoulder of Hale Bop Peak. I estimate the crown was at elevation 4700ft. From a map I guess it is ~200ft-300ft wide and it ran 300-400 vertical feet. There was also a fresh glide crack release to dirt at about 3000ft on a SW aspect above Butch Creek. I did not observe any shooting cracks or whumpfing at any time in my tour, even when I triggered the avalanche, which I found pretty odd.

Snowpack

I dug a pit a few feet above the the crown just to see what something so touchy would look like in the usual tests. The bed surface of the avalanche was obviously buried surface hoar, still easily visible. The crown was uniformly 45cm deep and propagated roughly 60ft wide. The slide ran full length on the slope, ~700 vertical feet. I measured the angle of the bed surface at several places and found 32-34deg. The slope rolled slightly steeper about 30 vertical feet below the crown, but I did not measure there. My compression test failed on isolation, the column slide smoothly off on 45cm deep layer. In the extended column test I got an easy propagating collapse result @30cm down before I got a medium propagating planar result on the 45cm layer. The whole intact 90cm wide column slid off into the pit. Also of note, I stuck my shovel into the remaining column for a photo after the ECT. When I removed the shovel *without prying* another section of the 90cm wide column smoothly slid off at 70cm down. This layer did not react in the normal round of 1-30 taps, but went very easily immediately after. It is also a reactive layer of concern but does not show up in the normal ECT nomenclature.
