I triggered a small avalanche today after dropping into the Pump House Chute at Jay Peak shortly after 11 am. I estimate the depth was 6-8 inches, and 15 ft wide. There were no other tracks when I got there. After making my way into the entrance a storm slab kicked off and dragged me down the face. I managed to stay above the snow and above most of the debris after sliding about 40 ft down the face. No one else was around. Some clear mistakes were made on my part. 1. I was riding solo in an area I should not have. 2. I failed to dig a snowpit or hand/hasty pit. The entrance to this run is quite blind and not easy to evaluate the snowpack until you are on slope. However, there are other runs with less consequence I could have used to evaluate this area.
