Sixmile

Today we went to Sixmile to skin a lot and ski a little.

• Storm totals were underwhelming, especially at middle and low elevations. 
• At 6800 feet, we measured 45 cm (17 inches) of soft snow above the most recent crust, in a sheltered location.
• At middle elevations, snow totals ranged from 6 to 15 cm (2 to 6 inches).
• We did not encounter signs of instability, except for isolated pockets of harmless, baby wind slabs.
• We found our best turns between the elevation of 6400 to 6200 feet.  
• Below 6000 feet, conditions remain difficult with surface obstacles (rocks, logs, brush, beargrass, etc).

No avalanche activity was observed.

In several hand pits, we found new snow resting above the 12/22 crust and 12/7 crust.

• New snow was not consolidated enough to be considered a slab.
• The 12/22 crust made for a supportable surface.
• Surface snow consisted of grapel and rimed particles. 
• Even on steep slopes, we did not get sluffing with our turns.
